ASPHALT WORKS!!  NCAT 2011 Study: SMA Good for 10 Million ESALs  The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) has completed test track research on the use of stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixes.  Through the first four cycles of the NCAT Pavement Test Track, 21 SMA sections have been put to the test (8 – 2000 track; 8 – 2003 track; 3 – 2006 track; and 2 – 2009 track).  Excellent performance of the SMA test sections in the first cycle prompted several states to use this premium mix type to extend pavement life for heavy traffic highways.  In a 5 year, 10 M ESAL study, SMA outperformed conventional Superpave mixes with only 2 mm of rutting and only a slight change in macro-texture and no cracking.  (More Info)

"Best Practice Guidance" Tack Coats – How and What to apply! CAPA has developed a technical document that supports the use of best practices for tack material and application. The document discusses tack application rate, materials, surface preparation, application techniques/tracking, and tack setting.

Thin Lift Overlay Guidance

• Use of Thin Lift Overlays Explained Thin lift overlays can be a cost effective tool in the pavement improvement box when pavement structure is needed but there may be tie-in restrictions to curb and gutter. Thin Overlay NAPA Publication; Thin Overlay Sample Specification. For more info

• And the Winner is – Thin Overlays The FHWA has released Results of Long-Term Pavement Performance SPS-3 Analysis: Preventive Maintenance of Flexible Pavements. Conclusions from this report include: Thin overlay and chip seal were more effective than slurry seal and crack seal treatments and performed better than the control section for fatigue cracking. Thin overlay mitigated and slowed the progression of rutting under all circumstances. Thin overlays outperformed the other treatments followed by chip seals for any existing level of rutting. Thin overlays and chip seals outperformed other treatments when the existing section had minimal cracking prior to the treatment and higher levels of preexisting cracking. All treatments were effective to some degree relative to the performance of the control section. View Report

Warm Mix Asphalt Use for Local Agency Projects   The City of Centennial is considering the use of warm mix asphalt as part of the reconstruction of a section of Arapahoe Road.  In discussions with CDOT, the following has been drafted to be included in the bid documents.

The use of warm mix asphalt (WMA) is allowed as an alternative to hot mix asphalt provided the following conditions are met.
All in-place specification requirements.
The WMA technology proposed and the asphalt producer/contractor are approved as per CDOT Colorado Procedure (CP) 59.

Concrete Industry Promotion Debunked
Representatives of the concrete and cement industry of Colorado are distributing and promoting the use of a life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) software developed by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA).  The software, entitled The Concrete Pavement Analyst (CPA) is being promoted as a “.. powerful tool to make pavement design comparisons …”  The Asphalt Institute has completed an analysis of the software and has concluded that (no shock here) the CPA software “.. has unreasonable biases to skew results in favor of concrete.”   Asphalt Institute – Concrete Pavement Analyst (CPA) – Setting the Record Straight and the Asphalt Alliance - LCCAExpress.

LEED and Green Construction - The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System serves as a scorecard for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings. It was designed to encourage the adoption of sustainable building and development practices. Sustainable development tries to balance the needs of people, nature, and the economy.  Pavement type selection (concrete vs. asphalt), on its own, directly contributes to only a few LEED credits. Credits can be earned in these ways:  (read more)

Thin Lift Overlays for Pavement Preservation – Agencies are being forced to stretch road improvement budgets and to maximize the number of roadways being repaired and improved.  Thin lift overlays are a tool in the box for pavement preservation.  Best practices for material selection need to be followed when using thin lift overlays.  In the Pueblo area, a new thin lift gradation (SX Modified) has been developed for 1-1/2” or less paving lifts with a 3/8” nominal maximum aggregate size (read more).
