Proposed P-403 (CDOT Modified) Specification The industry has reached consensus on the proposed P-403 (CDOT Modified) Specification. Much thanks to Bill VanHercke of CH2MHill for his leadership in this effort. The specification is being submitted for consider to the FAA Denver ADO.

Meeting Planned with FAA to Discuss Asphalt & Airports – January 7
A meeting is planned for 9:00am, Thursday, January 7 with the FAA to discuss asphalt specifications and airport paving projects. The FAA will be represented by Denver ADO Project Manager Brad Davis and Regional Airport Engineer & Paving Specialist Paul Johnson from the Seattle Office. Topics to be discussed include upcoming projects in 2010, 2009 in review, specification changes, recent MOD D-1 changes, open discussion). FAA to Allow Use of State Approved Mixes for Projects 3,000 tons or Less
{From FAA Mod D 1, approved September 28, 2009}: For projects less than 3000 tons, the entire P-401 or P-403 specification should be rewritten or State specification used provided that equivalent quality and density is required and the specification is approved by the FAA (ADO). State highway department specifications may be used for shoulders, access roads, perimeter roads, stabilized base courses under Item P-501, and other pavements not subject to aircraft loading. When state highway specification are approved, include all applicable/approved state specifications in the contract documents.”
 Need information on Airport issues, link to visit the Airfield Asphalt Pavement Technology Program (AAPTP) site which is to deliver applied research on asphalt airfield pavements that provides high quality, cost-effective asphalt pavements. The research projects will be focused on improving quality of hot mix asphalt (HMA), reducing costs, improving safety and providing training on HMA materials.
The AAPTP was established in 2004 through a cooperative agreement between the Federal Aviation Administration and Auburn University. Although closely related, the AAPTP is set up separately and operates independently from the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT).
