Smoothness update!

Bullet points from the Smoothness specification meeting August 18,  indicate the specification will remain as it is currently with minor adjustments.
Eric Prieve (CDOT) will issue a final draft of the specification for both Asphalt and Concrete after the September MAC  Meeting.

  • Percent improvement remains as an option for projects
  • The contractor will be able to change the category from Percent Improvement to HRI category 1 after the project is completed and they have reviewed the smoothness data, provided they had submitted the original data to make it eligible for the PI category. There will be no changing from Category 1 to PI. This will allow the contractor to maximize incentive dollars.
  • Leave outs remain at 25 feet from structures/ bridges etc.
  • Water valves will be included in the profile for Percent improvement projects unless they are in a wheel path
  • The project profile will begin five feet outside of the project limits  in order to create a smooth transition into and off the project. The limits for localized roughness will still begin twenty five feet inside the project limits. If corrections are required at the beginning and end of the project, CDOT will pay for corrective work.
  • The contractor will be allowed to do corrective work prior to submitting final smoothness test results to CDOT. Once the contractor submits smoothness test results to CDOT, they will then have no additional opportunities to do work to improve the ride and get incentive dollars. Only disincentive will be applied at this point.
  • Heater scarification projects without another corrective layer will be required to leave the project in the same or better condition as when they began work. No incentive or disincentive will be offered.

The specification will be reviewed in 2010 after the concrete industry has had one season under the RI specification.
