Asphalt Industry Making Great Environmental Strides Elam2011 Record Year for Compliance:  2011 was a very good year for the asphalt industry of Colorado regarding environmental compliance of asphalt plants/sand and gravel operations.  Of the 212 inspections, only 3 led to enforcement action and the penalty involved in each of the three was less than $5,999.  This is the highest level of compliance since first recorded in 2003.  “The whole industry should be proud of this achievement and the efforts of CAPA have made a quite a difference,” stated CAPA President Jimmy Marvel of Brannan Sand & Gravel. In support of the industry, CAPA continues to meet periodically with APCD representatives and has developed a Webinar - Environmental Compliance for HMA Production Facilities in Colorado (click here) to assist in permit compliance. {photo”  Elam Construction asphalt material plant, Ignacio, CO}

FHWA:  Implementation of Warm Mix a Top Priority In a phone conference earlier this month, NAPA Chairman Kim Snyder (Eastern Industries, Pennsylvania) and FHWA Deputy Administrator Greg Nadeau discussed priorities and strategies for expediting the deployment of warm-mix asphalt. Warm mix is one of FHWA's "Every Day Counts" initiatives. A chief goal of Every Day Counts is rapid field deployment of proven technologies. The discussion between Snyder and Nadeau laid the groundwork for a continuing collaboration between NAPA and FHWA on ensuring that warm mix is accepted and utilized as fully as possible. Nadeau's views on warm mix are laid out in the current issue of Asphalt Pavement magazine. Read Article It is estimated that approximately 25% of asphalt materials in Colorado in 2012 will be warm mix.

Paving GREEN in the City of Lakewood SAM_1813.jpgThe City of Lakewood improved the City Recycling Center recently by installing a porous asphalt pavement. This is the location where citizens come to deposit recyclable goods.  The installation of the porous system is a bonus to many are already concerned about the environment.  The City will realize credits from the EPA as well as this pavement is adjacent to a waterway to the north.  Anticipated water quality from the City yard will be improved through the filtering process of the porous system. This 400 ton project was constructed by CAPA Member APC Construction Co. Inc. and was a cooperative effort between Lakewood Public Works and the City Storm Water Dept. (Photo Gallery)
